Swell Season- No Interview, But Great Show Anyway

You may not have heard of The Swell Season, but if you saw the movie Once, then you've heard their music.  Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova were the stars of the amazing little movie with such powerful songs.  They are now touring the US under their band name, The Swell Season.

We did not make the cut for interviewing the band for their show in Seattle last night, but their manager was kind enough to give us some tickets for the show.  This was one of the best concerts I've seen, with Glen providing a running (hysterical) commentary throughout the show.  Glen and Marketa sound beautiful together and there is an emotional rawness and poignancy to their music that had the entire audience completely rapt.

(There was even a marriage proposal on stage before they performed "Falling Slowly".)

So thanks to Howard, their manager, for the tickets...and hopefully the next time we can get some face to face time with the artists for Groupee Backstage Live. Smiler

We decided that the theater was too dark for our iPhones (with no flash).  I agree with Ted and Boaz: it was a fabulous show!

Neat little tidbits...

*He sang the "Hoover sucker fixer guy" song (if you've seen the movie, you'll know)
*They sang "Mystic" by Van Morrison, at the request of someone in the audience, and it was great
*They sang a Pixies song as a duet, and sounded almost better than the original...forgot the title of the song, but they cut in with a bit of "Subcultcha" which was hilarious
*He told the story of his ratty guitar---how the owner of the Japanese guitar company tried to present him with a new one so that he'd stop making them look bad, but he's too attached to the one he has (it's got a famous giant gaping hole in it).
*He said that if you watch the movie, you can see the camera shake after he sings "Hoover sucker fixer guy" song, because the camera man was laughing so hard.

THere was loads more because Glen is quite the raconteur, but that's all I can brain dump for now.  Bottom line: if you get a chance to see them live, DO IT!
Well, Ted left out some details.  There was this cute girl a few rows ahead of us, and after a pep talk from Rosemary I decided to ask her to marry me.  But just as I was asking, I realized it was actually a guy with long hair, (and very nice skin).  It was pretty awkward after that...
